The Business Manager in the Independent School.
Ritter, Paul M.
The responsibilities of the school business manager have grown more complex since this manual was first published in 1967. As a consequence, this edition updates it and defines the complexities that have evolved since then. The guide begins with an outline of the work of the business manager and the relation of that work to the rest of tbe school. The outline is based on accepted theory and analysis of representative situations in National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) member schools. The background and experience of the qualified business manager and where to look for this person are discussed in the next chapter. This is followed by a discussion of the business manager's role in attending board meetings, as supervisor, and as participant in fund-raising activities. Relations with alumni, parents, and faculty are also discussed. The final chapter contains a detailed discussion of various specific responsibilities of the business manager: bookkeeping and accounting, purchasing, budgeting, buildings and grounds, food service, transportation, personnel management, long-range planning, insurance, volunteer services, electronic data processing, government regulations, and legal matters. The appendix contains a sample job description for the position of school business manager. (Author/MLF)
