In response to a need for quality resource materials for the Occupational Investigation component of Occupational Orientation, a project developed guides that addressed the needs of the four program components: self-appraisal, economic and societal factors, occupational clusters, and educational planning. A teacher's handbook was developed to coordinate student activities, as compiled in the guide, with course goals (see Note). A literature review surveyed topical areas related to design and course of the project--career education, occupational orientation, and developmental research and utilization. The Developmental Research Model was used to manage the project and examine specific development activities. The analysis phase consisted of problem analysis and information selection. Activities during the development phase--the major project focus--included gathering and assessing information (literature review, site visits, and meeting of guest writers and consultants), product innovation (writing outcomes), and project realization (prototype guides). During the evaluation phase the guides were field tested, efficiency and effectiveness of the activities evaluated, and each guide then revised. Instructors indicated preferences for illustrations, paper-and-pencil inventories, and practical "hands-on" activities. Field testing revealed a consistent need to adjust suggested time parameters for activities. The teacher's guide was reviewed by advisory committee members. (YLB)
