[Suquamish Today with Teacher's Guide].
Heuving, Jeanne
The purpose of these elementary grade social studies resource materials is to portray the continuity of the life of the Suquamish Tribe on the Port Madison Reservation in western Washington. The photographs accompanying the text in the student booklet document the coming together of Indian and non-Indian cultures: the gathering style of life centered around the longhouse, the signing of the Point Elliot Treaty forming the Port Madison Reservation, the forced attendance of children at boarding schools, and the construction of the Trident Submarine Base bringing an influx of non-Indians to the Reservation. The teacher's guide outlines goals and objectives, provides detailed background notes and captions for the photographs, lists discussion questions, suggests additional learning activities, and includes an extensive bibliography of selected references for the classroom, teacher background materials, and other Daybreak Star Press publications. While the point of view is almost exclusively restricted to the Suquamish Tribe, much that is said is true of other Puget Sound and Northwest tribes. (NEC)
