This three-part report summarizes data collected during fiscal year 1978-79 in a longitudinal study of 7,957 students at l5 California community colleges. Part I compares findings for vocational and non-vocational students in terms of demographic characteristics, educational objectives, academic achievement during the 1978-79 school year, employment status, and student evaluation of college services. Selected findings in this section reveal that while there were few demographic differences between vocational and non-vocational students, vocational students signed up for and completed slightly more units and were more likely to complete their objectives for attending college. Part II compares day and evening students with respect to the same variables, demonstrating that evening students were older, were more likely to be married and have dependents, and had a higher degree of persistence. Part III discusses: (1) the feasibility of using sampling techniques to meet state reporting requirements; (2) the representation of economically and educationally disadvantaged, displaced homemakers, Limited-English-Speaking, ethnic minorities, persons in non-traditional curricula, and physically handicapped in the study sample and their characteristics; and (3) 15 student prototypes designed to provide a more complete picture of the heterogeneous student body served by the community colleges.
