The Older Student Phenomenon: Planning Ahead.
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Atlanta, GA.
Essays on the growing population of adult students are collected. In a preface, E.T. Godbey highlights some characteristics of this population and the need for institutional changes to accommodate them. In one chapter Martha P. Weatherford describes recent changes in the overall student profile and reasons for the age changes. In a second chapter the same author discusses the resulting necessary changes in the instructional process: projected need for more faculty, changes in teacher tone and patience, and accommodating adult student attitudes in testing, grading, and assignments. Recruitment, marketing, and testing are discussed by Rebecca U. Brechtel. Willie Pierce examines the implications for change: philosophical, academic, and staffing concerns, and changes in recruitment, advising, admissions, registration, scheduling, physical plant, student services, and retention. A checklist for attracting and retaining the older student is included, as are a questionnaire for "Mature Student Information, a list of items to be included in student records, and an Adult Advisement Inventory.
