Geographic Literacy Among Intermediate Level Students in the United States: Fact or Fiction [And] National Council for Geographic Education: Intermediate Level Geography Test, Draft No. 3, Fall 1979. Parts I, II, & III.
Bettis, Norman C.
The process of constructing a test to assess geographic knowledge and understandings of fifth and sixth grade pupils is discussed. In addition, a draft of a test to measure geography skills and knowledge of physical and human geography is presented. The document is presented in three sections. In section I, information is presented on test objectives (to provide valid and reliable assessment), areas tested (skills, physical geography, and human geography), and domains of knowledge sampled by test items (analysis, application, and comprehension). Information is also presented on feedback from field evaluation of the test, test strengths and weaknesses, and format and terminology. Section II outlines objectives measured in the National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE) test and presents tabular data on test items, objectives, and scoring. Section III, the draft of the NCGE Intermediate Level Geography Test, consists of 29 questions on geography skills, 28 questions on physical geography, and 26 questions on human geography. Students are directed to answer questions involving map skills, locational skills, chart and graph reading, and analysis of illustrations and statements. (DB)
