One in a series of bibliographies related to rural library service, this document lists 164 entries dealing with reference services. The entries, dated from 1970 to 1978, are listed alphabetically by author with complete bibliographic information and consist primarily of national and regional library journals (nearly all published in the United States), books, and conference proceedings. Most works deal generally with the role of the library and the librarian in providing reference services; but rural and small libraries and academic, school, and medical libraries are mentioned specifically. Topics include reference service standards and guidelines, measurement of reference service, computer-assisted retrieval of reference materials, the use of paraprofessionals and non-professionals in reference service, new and unusual reference sources, and government publications as reference sources. Several entries discuss the reference interview including the necessary counseling skills and the effects of non-verbal communication. (JH)
