Goals and objectives, student activities, and a detailed course evaluation are provided in this guide for an English unit in which a rock climb serves as the basis for learning about different forms of literature and improving written and oral communication skills. The unit, designed to give below-average students an opportunity for success in school, has the following goals: completion of reading and composition assignments, use of time spent working on assignments as the criterion for grading, and participation in a one-day rappeling and rock climbing activity. Educational objectives are enumerated for each goal. A class schedule outlines activities for the 10-week unit. The first three weeks prepare students for the rock climb through reading true life-experience literature, viewing films, and practicing knot tying and belaying; activities following the climb include writing a personal experience and organizing a slide presentation about the climb. A teacher evaluation summarizes successful outcomes of the unit, reports specific information about the accomplishment of each objective, and suggests ways to improve participation in the rock climb, i.e., more and better preliminary activities to arouse interest and acquaint students with the skills necessary for the climb.
