Handbook for the Development of a Cooperative Adult Basic Education Program in Industry.
Felton, Mimi Edge
Based on experience gained during the development of the Planters Employee Training (PET) program in cooperation with the Suffolk City Schools, Virginia, this handbook provides guidelines for similar cooperative adult basic education (CABE) programs. The table of contents is arranged in the order in which the CABE/PET program was developed and shows one order of program development. The six chapters are (1) Presentation to Industry and Labor, (2) Identification of the Cooperating Parties (educational agency, industry, labor), (3) Program Director (qualifications, roles, and responsibilities), (4) Preplanning Meetings of the Cooperating Parties (needs assessment, objectives, and roles, responsibilities, and contributions of the cooperating parties), (5) Development of Program, and (6) Management of Program. More specific topics of program development (chapter 5) include plan of operation, recruitment and cooperation, screening and selection, attendance regulations and completions, format and curriculum, and evaluation. Appendixes amounting to over one-half of the guide include sample PET program materials such as a student information sheet and screening folder materials, a curriculum development plan and guide, and sources of CABE/PET program instructional materials.
