The Mississippi Catalog of Competencies for Public Elementary and Secondary Language Arts.

Phase III of a five-phase project which has implications for the improvement of instructional programs in Mississippi's elementary and secondary schools is described. In phase III, specifically stated objectives or competencies in language arts, designed to accomplish the educational objectives stated in phase II, are cataloged. Fourteen sections are presented: twelve sections contain those skills expected of students in a particular grade of language arts instruction, from 1 to 12; and two sections cover creative writing and world literature. The processes involved in developing these competency lists are briefly described. (Author/MH)
