Innovations in Science Teaching. The Forum for Liberal Education, Volume II, Number 4, February, 1980.
Mohrman, Kathryn, Ed.
Curricular development in undergraduate programs in the biological, physical, and mathematical sciences at a number of colleges and universities are described. One common theme is the continuing interest in computers in higher education. As the student bodies of many campuses become more heterogeneous with increasing enrollments of minorities and adults, science departments are adapting their offerings to accommodate different learning styles. Interdisciplinary studies, cooperation between academic science and more applied fields, interinstitutional projects, and school-community programs are among the developments in undergraduate science education. The following programs are described: Queensborough Community College's Comprehensive Improvement of Astronomy Education Program; Hope College's Comprehensive Instructional Program for Multidisciplinary Problem-Solving; Xavier University of Louisiana's CAUSE Project; Ohio State University's Teaching Calculus with Programmable Calculators Program; College of Mount St. Joseph's Modular Anatomy and Physiology Course for Allied Health Students; University of Rochester's Integrated Chemical Information Curriculum Program; California State University at Fullerton's Development of Reasoning in Science Program; Walla Walla College's Interdisciplinary Teaching Cooperative in Marine Sciences Program; and Oklahoma State University's Undergraduate Applied Mathematics Component in Cooperation with Regional Industries Program. A listing of additional programs and resources is included. (SW)
