State Fair Community College Experience Based Career Education, 1978-79. Third Party Evaluation Report.
Neely, Margery A.
An experience-based career education (EBCE) program for grades 10 and 11 in a community college district was assessed to determine the level of accomplishment of program objectives and those factors that either enabled or precluded their accomplishment. Program/process objectives addressed included expanding employer and community involvement in education; enrolling students representative of the total population; promoting the integration of academic, vocational, and general education; increasing the relevance of education; developing student attitudes, skills, and knowledge to cope with societal change; and promoting a positive attitude toward experience-based learning. Budget and expenditure data were analyzed and evaluated. Comparison of students in tradiitonal curriculum with EBCE students assessed learning resulting from participation in the alternative program. Areas for student evaluation were academic skills; work habits; attitudes toward work, learning environment, self, community, and plannfulness; career decision making skills; nontraditional exploration; career development; and career skills broadening employment opportunities. Locally developed and standardized instruments were used to collect data through pre- and post-testing. Results indicate (1) maintenance of some academic skills, (2) increase in attitudes of planfulness, (3) positive attitudes toward community and school (boys), and (4) increase in knowledge and use of resources in nontraditional occupations (girls). (Additional data and sample forms are appended.) (YLB)
