Enrollment and Attendance: 1969-1979.
Batten, Joyce
Enrollment data were collected and analyzed for the Los Angeles Community College District and each of its nine colleges for the years 1969 to 1979. The data were used to profile the District as a whole and each college in terms of: (1) Fall 1977 and 1978 enrollment in the categories of day/evening, male/female, full-/part-time, freshmen/sophomores, first-time/continuing, and under/over 21 years old; (2) Spring 1978 and 1979 enrollment in the same categories; (3) ethnic distribution; (4) age distribution; (5) total enrollment (1969-1979); (6) weekly student contact hours (WSCH); (7) WSCH per student; (8) average daily attendance for each academic year. Enrollment data were also collected for the instructional television and overseas programs. The district profile indicated that although total enrollment had grown since 1969, there was a 3.7% enrollment decline between Fall 1977 and Fall 1978, and a 4.9% decline between Spring 1978 and Spring 1979. The cancellation of summer session 1978 contributed to this decline. The largest enrollment declines occurred among full-time, male, day students. Although WSCH for 1978 and 1979 roughly paralleled the drop in enrollment, WSCH per student declined only slightly (0.6% in Fall and 0.1% in Spring), indicating a slowing in the trend toward lighter class loads. The enrollment report includes numerous tables and a glossary. (JP)
