This is the first of two volumes containing papers focusing on reading processes and pedagogy that were drawn from the nineteenth annual meeting of the National Reading Conference held in 1969. Among the topics discussed in the 42 papers are the following: underlining, individualized reading instruction, reading improvement programs in industry and education in the United States and Canada, semantic constructs and beginning reading, reading research, reading tests, reading comprehension, reading performance, language and critical reading, personality differences and learning styles in reading, word recognition, individual differences in reading, the decoding process in silent reading, the effect prior letter knowledge on the learning of sight words, lexical and structural items as predictors of readability for high and low ability readers, and psychological principles in a strategy for teaching the reading of a standard dialect.
