Trainers in Multicultural Education: Progress Report.
Tanaka, Masako N.; Stripp, Steven
This three-part report describes activities of a multicultural education training project for elementary teachers in San Francisco. The three segments of the project discussed are the workshops for trainers, networking activities, and classroom evaluation activities. The two workshops, Provisioning the Multicultural Classroom and Working with Children in the Multicultural Classroom, are described in terms of participant selection, preparation of training materials, conduct of the workshop, and participant evaluation of the workshops. A list of participants is provided. Networking activities were structured to allow participants to present multicultural materials developed and/or used successfully in their own programs. The major classroom study evaluation will be accomplished during the next period of the project; however, preliminary data are available. During the two workshops, one trainer and one evaluator for each of six schools were identified. Classroom observations included scores for the total number of minority cultural materials observed, number of cultures represented in the classroom, types of multicultural materials, and availability of learning centers. Also, the number of multicultural activities provided, different cultures represented by adults in the classroom, and the ratio of community people to staff who participated in multicultural activities for one month prior were measured. Appendices describe the preliminary training model, sample multicultural units, daily diaries for workshops, and networking records and assessment forms. (KC)
