Performance and Attitudes of University Transfer Students as a Function of Demographic and Institutional Variables.
Holahan, Carole K.; Kelley, H. Paul
As part of a longitudinal study of undergraduate transfer students at the University of Texas at Austin, students were surveyed in December 1973 and April 1975 for data on: demography, selected characteristics of the student's high school and previous college, and experience at U.T. Austin. Presented here are analyses of attitudinal data obtained from these surveys and of achievement data obtained from university records. Of the four major variables included in the study (GPA at last college, expected GPA at U.T. Austin as reported near the end of the first semester, directness of entry, and classification) GPA at the last college and expected GPA were most closely correlated with student attitudes, and may be predictors of later academic success. Type of previous college was more closely correlated with success than size of previous college. The findings point to a need for careful counseling and advising of some transfer student groups. The Transfer Student Questionnaire is appended. (MSE)
