The report describes an effort to develop and test instructional materials, techniques and procedures - ESSETS (environmental sensing, selection, evaluation and training system) - for teaching functionally blind young adults to use electronic travel aids (ETAs). Considered are development of training guidelines, field site selection and instructor training, field tryouts with 16 students, and findings regarding the effects of ETAs on performance. Case studies of two persons are presented to demonstrate different responses to training with the Laser Cane. Among conclusions formed were that the ESSETS materials were workable in the field and that students who participated in the study seemed to find the experience satisfying and were able to accomplish many more tasks successfully with their ETAs than without them.
