The main purpose of this paper is to outline the ways educational administrators are prepared in Australia. Universities and Colleges of Advanced Education (CAEs) provide the formal preparation programs in educational administration. An analysis is made of the types of programs generally offered and the role of the universities and the CAEs. The paper describes several approaches to the inservice education of school administrators undertaken in the various Australian states. In the final section, a critical analysis is made of the preparation of educational administrators in Australia, considering such factors as the curriculum, teaching methodology, inservice education, and the recruitment of educational administrators.
