Advanced Courses in Social Work Research in Canada: Some Examples.

The document describes various approaches to advanced courses in social work research in Canadian Universities. Following an introduction to the report in Section I, Section II presents course outlines for the master of social work degree. Outlines are arranged according to categories of advanced design, evaluation research, specialization/concentration research, and independent research. Section III describes courses in advanced statistics and use of the computer. Section IV presents a policy statement of a research practicum which outlines steps and duties of the student presenting a paper and his/her advisory committee, and Section V describes the thesis/project paper. Section VI outlines assignments and exercises which include research concepts in social work health practice, measuring social impact, exercises on a goal achievement model of social program evaluation, and a selected value position questionnaire. Section VII describes advanced level courses for the bachelor of social work degree. A two-part course, "Research in Social Work and Social Welfare Issues," plus selected topics and an individual social work research project are outlined. Section VIII describes a research course at the doctoral level. The questionnaire used to compile the report and additional course outlines are included in appendices. (KC)
