From the 1950's to the 1970's, graduate student tuition funding trends at Saint Louis University were studied for the business administration, education, law, and medicine programs. Administration of a questionnaire to graduate degree recipients resulted in a return of 1,453 usable responses. The most important external source for tuition funding in business administration was employer funding. The continuing decline in external funding for graduate programs in education resulted primarily because of a reduction in funding by religious orders. There has been an increasing ability of law students to obtain Federal Government loan funds, and medical students have increasingly received federal and state loans and grants. It is suggested that private graduate education institutions need to accurately estimate the shifts in magnitude of potential external tuition funding, both by specific program and within a given time period. A literature review, a sample questionnaire, and summary response data are included. (SW)
