The third in a series of six reports on higher education in Iowa, this document presents enrollment projections for Iowa postsecondary education institutions from 1978 through 1986. Data were collected from the regents universities, independent colleges, and area colleges throughout the state. A computerized nonprescriptive projection model was used allowing manipulation of variables, parameters, and assumptions so the effects of each variable could be investigated. Definitions and thirteen assumptions on which the projections and models are based are described. Tabulated data and graphs provide enrollment projections by sex, type of institution, year, student status, and general field of study. Projections for university enrollment suggest that enrollment will rise at the master's degree level, and will decrease in certain disciplines at the doctoral level. It is projected that independent colleges will provide approximately one-third of all undergraduates in the state. It is suggested that the area colleges will experience an enrollment increase due to the popularity of career education programs; however, rising costs may limit the peak enrollment figure. The procedure for using the computer program and the model to determine enrollment projections is explained. (SF)
