On the Evaluation of University Extension Programs: A Review and an Example with Illustrative Instruments and a Bibliography of Related ERIC Literature. Information Series No.11. NIU Information Program in Career Education.
Spikes, Frank; Mason, Robert C.
A comparative study of on-campus and off-campus credit courses at Northern Illinois University during 1975, based on the perceptions of selected faculty members who taught the same course on- and off-campus and students enrolled in the courses, is described. The study attempted to determine if differences in perception were related to age, university status, academic discipline, or sex of students. Results showed that: (1) on campus courses were perceived by students as being of higher quality than off campus courses; (2) students over 51 years old felt their needs had been met more successfully than did all other student age groups; (3) the College of Professional Studies met perceived needs better than any other college; (4) male students perceived on- and off-campus courses as lower in quality than did female students; and (5) those students pursuing an academic or vocational goal were less satisfied with on- and off-campus courses than students whose main goal in attending college was social. Two appendices are included: one listing evaluation instruments used in the extension programs of sixteen representative college and universities and an annotated bibliography of fifty-five Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) citations from 1966 through 1974.
