Just as the Micmac word "wejkwapniaq" may be interpreted in several ways, the title of this compilation of fact, folklore, and history of the Micmac people can be interpreted to mean "The Dawn of Nova Scotia History" or "The Coming of New and Bad Things for the Micmac". This teacher's guide provides information on the land occupied by these native Canadians, their political structure and role and qualities of tribal chiefs, education, religion, and language. Aspects of Micmac education detailed are: implement making (bows and arrows, lances, cradles, canoes, snowshoes); medical and first aid practices; methods of fishing, hunting, and trailblazing; preparation of food, clothing, and shelter; and how to tell time by observing natural events. Language information explains how the Micmacs formed place names and lists names of manufactured objects, seasons and months of the year, animals, and spiritual words. A twenty question test, seven classroom projects, and a bibliography are included. Appendices provide maps showing where Micmac reserve bands are located in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, and Prince Edward Island. (NEC)
