Ke Kuhikuhi Alaka'I (A Guiding Gesture). Operations Manual. Hawaii Bound.
Hale, Alan N.
The Hawaii Bound School seeks to provide a significant physical and emotional wilderness experience to those participating in its course. For 24 days a group of 12 students live together and are exposed to a wide variety of wilderness experiences. Among the places visited are the Kohala Mountains, Mauna Loa, Ka'u Desert, and the ocean itself. During the course each student is trained to learn (1) to live and travel comfortably in four wilderness environments; (2) to provide wilderness emergency care and to be part of a search and rescue team, (3) to keep a personal journal; (4) to participate in group discussions; and (5) to gain an appreciation of the cultural, geological and historical heritage of Hawaii. This operations manual is intended for use in the field as a guide and reference for instructors in the Hawaii Bound School. The instructional techniques it explores include teaching models, communication skills, group procedures, and safety programs. It lists the course curriculum content, including first aid training, sanitation, solo experiences, rappel, food, map and compass use, etc. Resource material is given on astronomy, the Hawaiian calendar, Hawaiian skills, plants, fish identification and use as food sources, aquatic plants, Hawaiian history, land divisions, religion, legends and songs. An environmental summary and place names are given for each of the four wilderness sites. (DS)
