This handbook examines sources of information useful to educators and educational consultants who wish to learn about innovative practices and/or solutions to educational problems in other schools. A discussion of information storage describes the access to information in reports, periodicals, unpublished reports, and other materials through such special publications as indexes, bibliographic reviews, annual reviews, and yearbooks; some of the more commonly used of these publications are listed and described. Guidelines for defining the topic of an information search are provided to assist in the selection and examination of appropriate sources for the information desired. A description of the services provided by the federally funded Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) data base includes the monthly index to its document collection, a monthly review of articles in professional journals, and the availability of items in the document collection. The advantages and disadvantages of computerized searches of the educational literature are discussed, and the computer search process is briefly described. A list of selected readings is included.
