Information is presented on nonclassroom-based learning in Missouri higher education during the 1977-78 academic year. Only six institutions in the state reported using television, radio, newspaper, or correspondence study as a means of making college-level credit courses available to students. Correspondence study is a much more frequently used method in Missouri. Data are provided on undergraduate and graduate enrollment in credit television courses and in correspondence courses. Data are also presented for state and private institutions on the total undergraduate credit awarded by examination and by assessment of prior learning. It is concluded that these nontraditional instructional modes may be increasingly popular if segments of the population that have traditionally been underrepresented in higher education, such as older persons and minorities, become more active in pursuing college education. The data obtained for 1977-78 will be used as a comparative base for future studies. (SW)
