Energy Sources, Costs and Availability. Technical Report No. 1 of a Study of School Calendars.
New York State Education Dept., Albany. Div. of Research.
The first in a series of reports consolidates data about energy sources and extrapolates that information to the problems and expenses that New York has and will experience in heating public schools. A presentation of national energy consumption is followed by an examination of the availability of potential alternatives to petroleum and natural gas. An examination of regional energy resources and usage shows that the state of New York is well above the national average in its dependence on oil and, because of the extreme temperature ranges, the nation's pessimistic outlook on energy availability and cost is even more severe for the state. An analysis of forces and factors leading to the current situation follows. The effect of cost on energy sources is discussed and times required to complete facilities for standard sources of energy and alternative energy sources are projected. The last section of the report presents data concerning energy consumption in the school building and the effect of calendar options on total energy consumption. An extensive bibliography concludes the report. (Author/MLF)
