Parent Involvement in Education: The Follow Through Experience.
Carnine, L. M.
This paper describes the positive effects of the Parent Program of the University of Oregon Follow Through Program. Section I illustrates the positive effects of parent involvement in two case histories of parents' political activism directed at securing and maintaining quality education for their children. Section II focuses on parents' involvement in the schools as paraprofessionals. Section III discusses how the program has enhanced the growth of parents as teachers in the home, with particular emphasis on the recently introduced Home Reading Program. The hidden effects of parent involvement on parents themselves and on the community are discussed in Section IV. Also discussed are other positive effects of the program demonstrated in the Walt Haney reanalysis of Follow Through parent interview data. (Author/MP)
