The Effects of Training in Discrimination of Pitches on the Ability to Discriminate Speech Sounds in Primary Age Children Classified as Learning Disabled in the Area of Auditory Discrimination.
Baxley, Barbara L.
The paper reports on a study in which 64 students (6-9 years old) identified as learning disabled in the area of auditory discrimination were trained to discriminate musical pitches in order to assess effects on speech discrimination. A detailed review of the literature is presented regarding the use of music in remediation, the definition of learning disabilities, and the concept of auditory perception based on J. Wepman's model of perceptual processing. It is explained that treatment consisted of a 5-week program in which Ss were trained to discriminate pairs of successive pitches of no less than a major second and no more than two octaves, and that Ss were required to demonstrate an understanding of the concept of same/different and the ability to discriminate pitches through activities including body movement and verbal response. Data from the Pitch Discrimination Test and Wepman Auditory Discrimination Test are analyzed. Among conclusions drawn is that there is a positive, although small correlation between pitch discrimination and speech sound discrimination which would probably result in improved speech sound discrimination as pitch discrimination is improved.
