This book presents a view of the Japanese American experience from the time of their immigration to this country in the 1800s to their acculturation into American society in the 1970s. Topics dealt with include the prejudice and mistrust experienced by the Japanese immigrants in this country, particularly their evacuation and internment in "relocation centers" during World War II, war brides, intermarriage, Buddhism and Christianity, and the current interest in various aspects of Japanese culture, from the tea ceremony to the art of gardening. Japanese contributions to America such as judo, flower arranging, the art of bonsai, and foods are also considered. In addition, the contributions made by well-known Japanese Americans are discussed.
