Undergraduate Public Policy Programs: Public Policy Studies as Liberal Education. Forum for Liberal Education, March 1979.
Mohrman, Kathryn, Ed.; And Others
This bulletin on undergraduate public policy programs includes an article on public policy studies as liberal education by Joel L. Fleishman, and descriptions of the following college programs: public policy analysis at the University of North Carolina, public service studies program at Oberlin College, urban and metropolitan studies major at Michigan State University, policy studies at Dartmouth College, policy studies major at Syracuse University, program in political economy at Williams College, and public policy program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. An annotated listing of additional programs and resources is also provided. The article describes public policy studies as an integration of knowledge from several disciplines for application to current policy problems. Policy studies programs have been established in many ways at different institutions. Some are in political science or public administration departments, as sequences in professional schools, or as separate departments or institutes. Many public policy programs are graduate sequences, often at the master's level. Policy studies can also be an appropriate undergraduate major in a liberal arts setting. The undergraduate major at Duke University is described in the article. (SW)
