The paper discusses work training and employability of the mildly retarded in Australia, and reports on a pilot survey of patterns of employment of the mildly retarded. Employment prospects for the mentally handicapped are reviewed. Factors seen as influencing the employment of the mildly retarded include psychological variables, employer attitudes, and government and community attitudes. Types of employment available to the retarded are reviewed and are said to be limited to those at the bottom of the occupational scale. The benefits of work experience programs and prevocational training are discussed. The results of the survey on patterns of employment of the mildly retarded are presented in terms of social, educational, and vocational factors. (DLS)
