A Proposal for an Alternative to Out-of-School Suspension for Worthington High School Students: The Saturday School.
Gooding, James; Fitsko, Michael
It is proposed that a disciplinary Saturday school may be a good alternative to student suspension because it solves many of the problems involved with suspending students from school. Allowing students to attend Saturday school rather than being suspended gives them an opportunity to improve their grades and to attend all their regular classes. It avoids the stigma of absence from school and does not reward those skipping school with the opportunity to miss more classes. Problems with the program include transportation and interference with students' Saturday jobs. The program would allow those who cooperate fully with Saturday school activities to leave early or reduce their attendance days. Evaluation by parents, students, and teachers is an important component of the program. The major cost for the program is for the supervision and instruction of students. Teachers, honor students, or resource persons may be utilized as supervisors. Attachments to the document include forms used in the Saturday school program and an evaluation of the program. (JM)
