This guide was prepared to assist college administrators and apprenticeship coordinators administering the apprenticeship training programs of the University of Hawaii's community colleges. Apprenticeship is defined as training for those occupations commonly known as skilled crafts or trades which require a wide and diverse range of skills and knowledge. Areas outlined in the guide are: (1) the advantages which apprenticeships offer to the individual, the employer, and to society; (2) those state and federal organizations which are concerned with apprenticeships; (3) criteria for and a list of apprenticeable occupations; (4) state and federal recommendations and requirements in the areas of provisions, apprenticeship classifications, the apprenticeship agreement, state apprenticeship standards, and equal employment opportunity; and (5) the role of the apprenticeship coordinator, which is considered in terms of his legal responsibilities, responsibilities related to instruction, suggestions for the establishment of training programs, record and report documentation, apprentice evaluation, and program evaluation. A glossary of terms is included and appendices contain sections from the apprenticeship agreement and from federal and state laws, rules, and regulations. A brief bibliography is also included. (MB)
