Fall 1975 Entering Students Enrolled in Fall 1978 (Seventh Semester). Student Flow Project, Report No. 49.
Hawaii Univ., Honolulu. Community Coll. System.
This report continues an analysis of the student flow patterns of the fall 1975 entering students at the Hawaii community colleges. Focus is placed on the extreme persisters (students who were enrolled for all six semesters without a break in attendance at their campus of entry) who continued their studies for the seventh semester. Findings are discussed for the community college total and for selected campuses which enrolled at least 150 students. Of the 8,979 entering students in fall 1975, 787 (8.8%) enrolled for seven continuous semesters. At the end of that semester, 132 students had completed their degrees, raising the total number of community college graduates from the 1975 entering group to 1,478 or 16%. Study results indicate that high proportions of business, public services, and technology students, new (as opposed to transfer) students, and students with grade point averages of 3.0-4.0 were in the extreme persister group. There were statistically significant differences, by sex, for educational objective, grade point average, age, and hours carried and earned within the group. Data tables outline correlations by sex, campus, program, educational objective, and graduation. (MB)
