The influence of aversive conditions on interpersonal attraction was investigated using 60 female undergraduates as subjects. Dyads were formed and equally divided into aversive (loud-noise) and neutral (low-noise) conditions. After completing an attitude survey questionnaire subjects completed a short filler task while the experimenter constructed bogus attitude surveys based on each subject's responses. Subjects were then separated, and rated each other on the experimental bogus response using the Interpersonal Judgment Scale under noise conditions similar to the earlier ones. Results supported the hypotheses that aversive circumstances lead to decreases in attraction for simulated strangers who are not physically present and also result in increases in attraction for "real" strangers actually present during exposure to aversive stimuli.
