The status of higher education in Texas is examined in this major report of changes in higher education over the past decade. Information on enrollment, cost, financial aid, job opportunities, and facilities in higher education institutions is given for private higher education, professional higher education, community colleges, and state colleges and universities. For the past decade Texas has been experiencing rapid growth and development of higher education institutions and ranks second in the nation for the number of students enrolled. The increasing costs of maintaining these institutions demand that financial support be increased substantially to maintain existent programs. Recommendations for state actions and policies on student assistance programs, public institutions, professional education, educational facilities, and funding for higher education are included. Twenty-one high priority items for consideration by the state coordinating board are also listed. Numerous tables and graphs provide statistical data. (BH)
