Pilot Parents: An Organizer's Handbook.

Intended for parents of mentally retarded children, the booklet describes the organization of a parent support program in Canada. Sections outline seven steps involved in the development of a Pilot Parents Program: (1) one or two parents in a local association for the mentally retarded chapter decide to start Pilot Parents; (2) a Pilot Parents organizing committee is set up; (3) Potential Pilot Parents are recruited from the association membership; (4) a short but intensive training program is held for Pilot Parents; (5) Pilot Parents is publicized in the community via a brochure, the local newspaper, radio, television; (6) Pilot Parents are matched with new parents; and (7) the matches are followed up and supported by the committee. Included are reading suggestions for parents, a list of suqgested films and videotapes, and basic information (including an article titled "Your Child is Mentally Retarded--What Do You Do When You Find Out?" by N.
