Critical Issues in Education.
Woodling, Ruth W., Ed.
This publication contains the edited text of the proceedings of the September 1976 Conference on Education for Georgia Legislators. Addresses by 20 experts from Georgia and around the country are presented. The proceedings are intended to help legislators, educators, parents, and others interested in deeper insight into the issues of educational accountability, school finance, school disruption, and collective bargaining. Five participants addressed issues surrounding educational accountability, focusing on outcomes of current accountability attempts, performance-based teacher certification, accountability attempts in Florida and North Carolina, and statewide testing in Georgia. Five speakers discussed school finance, including its politics, the role of the federal government and the courts, and school finance in Florida. One participant discussed the recommendations made by the Florida Citizens' Committee on Education, while another dealt with the more general topic of what parents expect from schools. Five experts on dealing with school disruption focused on this topic, making comments on discipline policies in Florida and Atlanta, Georgia, and school suspension policies in both conventional and alternative schools. Those speakers who addressed collective bargaining concentrated principally on teachers' bargaining rights and right to strike and California's new teacher collective bargaining law. (Author/JM)
