Sequential Physical Education Reform: The M-5 Project. Application for Submission to the Joint Dissemination Review Panel (JDRP).
Morphy, Carolyn
The M-5 Project is a sequential physical education program for children in the primary grades and intermediate grades. It embodies the main concepts of the movement education approach. Activities are individualized, based on needs identified by results of physical fitness tests, that are carried out in 30-minute daily sessions at a series of six Movement Activity Centers. Activities at each center are prescribed by a series of curriculum cards, color-coded according to levels of difficulty. Children rotate from center to center at five-minute intervals and progress from card to card at each center as skills are developed. Self-direction is expected. Work at Movement Activity Centers is interspersed with regular weekly self-testing and small- and large-group creative play experiences. Throughout the period in which the program was developed, children were tested to determine the effectiveness of the program. Results of analysis of third-year pre-post data of project children revealed that over 91 percent of project children achieved gains that were significant at the .01 level. Supplementary information on effectiveness is provided as well as comparisons with control groups. Cost information for operating the program is presented, as well as a discussion of the educational significance of the results and the applicability of the program to other situations. (DS)
