Performance Based Elementary Teacher Education.
Green, Asa N.; Patrenos, James H.
A program that includes teaching and learning theory in a realistically applied teaching-learning process for prospective elementary school teachers is described. Student teachers are required to participate in interaction seminars where theories of teaching and learning and their application are presented, discussed, and analyzed. In a laboratory setting, the professional staff demonstrates various teaching strategies through simulation, films, or video tapes of real instruction in process. The elementary teacher education students develop plans and instructional activities and, following this, teach the children for whom they have planned and developed these activities. Their performance is videotaped and analyzed by their peers and professors. The following skills are required to be demonstrated: (1) personal effectiveness skills; (2) student assessment skills; (3) instructional planning skills; (4) instructional management skills; and (5) interaction with students' skills.
