Social Studies in Early Childhood: An Interactionist Point of View. Bulletin 58.
Pagano, Alicia L., Ed.
Six articles focus upon social studies as an essential subject in early childhood education. All articles take an interactionary approach; that is, they view children as acting upon and being acted upon by their environment. "Young Children Growing through Action" presents a developmental approach centered around four themes: (1) growth through action and interaction, (2) growth within the developmental stages, (3) growth through integration of social and cognitive skills, and (4) growth through observation, both by teachers and by children. "Children Making Decisions and Solving Problems" relates three case studies which involved young children in effective thinking, feeling, and acting. The case studies describe four-year-olds building their own city, kindergarteners listening to a story, and preschoolers sharing a cleanup campaign. "Children Becoming Citizens" provides guidelines for managing conflict situations, describes the role of the adult in promoting citizenship, and outlines the developmental stages as related to citizenship competencies for early and middle childhood. "Children, Parents, Teachers: Rediscovery of an Important Triad" lists strategies and notes projects designed to promote parental involvement. "Children and Media" offers procedures for using television and other media as aids to social education. The author reviews viewing patterns of children and outlines steps for informed use of television. "Children Learning and Using Social Studies Content" examines methods for organizing teaching based on the social sciences and on child psychology. (KC)
