Labor Studies Programs: Objectives, Proposals, Policies, Outlines & Guidelines.
International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America, Detroit, MI.
This document outlines a labor studies program which may lead to several levels of achievement: a certificate in labor studies, an associate degree, an associate of arts degree, or a transfer of credits leading to a baccalaureate degree. The program is intended for labor union members or for anyone else interested in labor studies. Objectives of the proposed program are: (1) to provide a broad understanding and perspective of economic, social, and political problems, (2) to provide educational opportunities for individual growth and advancement, and (3) to equip members of labor organizations with skills needed to exercise their union and civic responsibilities. The curriculum combines the fields of social science, humanities, and communications. The bulk of the document contains descriptions and syllabi for 12 courses, each of which is outlined for an eighteen-week duration. The courses include Introduction to Organized Labor in America, Collective Bargaining (three separate courses), Union Leadership Skills, Structure and Administration of Unions, and a Laboratory-Intern Labor Project. A bibliography listing textbooks, supplementary reading, and films is included for each course. Post-secondary institutions in the United States and Canada offering labor education/labor studies programs based on this model are listed. (KC)
