Handbook for College Administration.
Sprunger, Benjamin E.; Bergquist, William H.
The result of two years of program experimentation, research, and writing, this handbook is the fourth in a series of practical guides for college faculty and administrators who wish to improve the quality of teaching, learning, and management in their institutions. In Chapter 1 the roots of modern management are traced back thousands of years and it is argued that management is an honorable and essential human enterprise. Principles of administration are discussed and collegiate administration is seen as a management process involving six key functions, which are systematically treated in the subsequent six chapters of the handbook. Chapter 2 provides a general perspective on institutional planning. In Chapter 3 the function of organizing is discussed, along with the factors that influence it, and the three basic organizations with which the chief administrative officer must work: the board of trustees, the administrative structure and the committee structure. Staffing is addressed in Chapter 4, including personnel planning, formulating job descriptions, locating candidates, and assessing and selecting applicants. Chapter 5 deals with the function of leading, and evaluating is the focus of Chapter 6. The handbook concludes in Chapter 7 with a statement about the vital role that developing professional, personal, and organizational skills can play in a comprehensive personnel program. Numerous practical suggestions for programming are offered. Appended are documents on career development leaves, discussions about work, a management development plan, administrative development workshop designs, and MODEL-NETICS: a management training program.
