Explorations in Professional Development: The First Three Years.

A California University systemwide approach to professional development encompassing the three facets of personal development, instructional development, and environmental modification is summarized. Objectives of professional development and objectives of successful campus programs are presented and aspects of the Center for Professional Development (including background, financing, administration, and future plans) are discussed. The 1974-1977 evaluation of the Center, including recommendations and issues relating to advancement and tenure, collective bargaining, funding, campus programming, teaching and research priorities, faculty concerns, is presented. Strategies utilized by the Center, such as workshops, consultation, seminars, discussion groups, retreats, and luncheons, are discussed. Also described are campus programs (organization, activities, funding, evaluation, and the future) at each of the following 11 colleges and universities in the system: California State College, Bakersfield; California State University, Chico; California State University, Fresno; California State University, Long Beach; California State University, Northridge; California State Polytechnic University, Pomona; California State College, San Bernadino; and San Jose State University.
