Widening Opportunity Research Center Project (September, 1976-June, 1978). Final Report.
Middlesex Community Coll., Bedford, MA. Div. of Community Services.
The history, purposes, activities and success of the Widening Opportunity Research Center (WORC), founded in 1972 to promote continuing education in Massachusetts, are documented in this project report. Each area of the WORC program is described and evaluated as of 1978, including: (1) counseling; (2) training; (3) employment referral; and (4) promotion of adult service centers. The numerous positive effects of the program's information dissemination projects and activities (conferences, group guidance, skill-building, and career planning workshops, etc.), particularly for low income and minority groups, are related. The failures of the program, including its inability to create a pool of experienced committed volunteers to supplement staff efforts and failure to provide training for other institutions in the development of adult service centers, are examined along with the many successes. Recommendations are made concerning improving and/or perpetuating each area of WORC. (WI)
