Research involving split-brain patients has shown that the two hemispheres of the brain process information differently. The left side of the brain is more analytical, the right side is more holistic, taking in overall characteristics rather than specific detail. This reserach can be applied to the educational process in several ways. The concepts of learning and creativity can be enlarged to include right-brain thinking and mental abilities. Learning and creativity can be facilitated by using learning strategies that activate the lesser-used right side of the brain. These strategies include imagery, pictures, chunking, and analogies. Since evaluating only the verbal and analytical outcomes of learning may fail to reveal the full effects of instruction, brain laterality considerations should have an impact on curriculum development, as well as the evaluation of instructional effectiveness and learner achievement.
