A Modified Approach to Improve the Use of a Computerized Information Delivery System in Two-Year Colleges in New York State.
Gross, Linda Chitayat; And Others
Findings are presented from the third year of the demonstration of the Guidance Information System (GIS), a computer-based information delivery system providing occupational, two-year college, four-year college, and financial aid information to students in two-year colleges in New York. Conclusions, based on experiences with seven colleges during 1974-1977 and on comparisons with studies of GIS use in high schools and prison settings, include: (1) community colleges, in their first year of involvement with the system, got off to a slow start during the time in which the computer system was being integrated into the ongoing pattern of counseling activity; (2) use of the computer varied as a function of college characteristics and implementation strategies; (3) variations in the level of use were found among sites of a similar type; (4) settings differing in organizational complexity differed in regard to length of time needed to implement a computer system; and (5) the amount and pattern of use of the system varied substantially among different types of settings. It is also stressed that counselors played a major role in referring students to the computer, and also served to make students aware of the potential and limitations of the computerized information. The availability of the computer did not appear to have an impact on counselors' work load, nor on division of counselor responsibilities, although there were reports that the quality of counseling improved.
