Comparing Visual/Tactile Performance and Reading Achievement.

The theory that reading is a perceptual process was tested in a study involving 216 fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. The significance of the relationship between performance on a standard reading test and on an apparatus designed to test visual/motor perception was assessed. An analysis of the data revealed that there was no relationship between performance on the reading test and on the apparatus. The data indicate that skill in reading and in visual perception are not related. (Appendixes contain a scoring sheet for the visual/motor perception instrument, class-by-class breakdowns of the findings, and tables of data analysis.) (FL)
