Highline's Vocational Exploratory & Preparatory Program. Interim Report. (Second Year, September 7, 1977 - September 6, 1978).
Highline Public Schools, Seattle, WA.
To demonstrate that instructional strategies developed by the National Institute of Education (NIE) Experience-Based Career Education models can be adopted/adapted by a community-based program which is offered within a traditional high school's elective program, the Highline school district implemented a community-based career education (CBCE) program in three of its five high schools. Two program designs were offered: a two-hour version including job-site visitation during school hours and a one-hour version in which job-site visitation was arranged after school hours. The one-hour version was considered the most popular and feasible design for continuation. A third-party evaluation was conducted based on eight student outcomes relating to career awareness, self awareness, and career planning. Eighty students participating in the program and a control group of 100 non-participating students were administered pre- and post-written inventories and were also interviewed. Comparisons were made between the groups' scores, and conclusions were made based on the eight student outcome objectives. Some of these conclusions are the following: (1) the CBCE program had a definite impact on the students' abilities to analyze conditions and requirements of occupations, but little or no impact on the students' increased understandings of positive and negative rewards associated with various types of works; (2) the treatment students demonstrated increased interest in and understanding of their own abilities; and (3) CBCE had little or no impact on the actual selection of jobs stereotyped for the opposite sex.
